In my opinion, Toronto-based Ecobee is the only worthy contender to Honeywell and Nest’s domination on the smart thermostat market.
Ecobee offers a wide range highly capable thermostats and sensors that fill out the obvious gaps left by the main players in the market. One such device is the Ecobee3 thermostat.
My most favorite feature on the Ecobee3 smart thermostat range would be the remote wireless sensor.
I no longer have to wake up at the middle of the night shivering only to walk into a warm living room since the thermostat can’t sense the temperatures in my room.
The remote sensors lets you keep the temperatures of any far-flung rooms in check by sending the remote feedback back to the thermostat. Don’t get me wrong, there is more to the Ecobee Wifi thermostats than the remote sensor.
Ecobee’s remote control goes beyond a smartphone app and ventures into Apple Watches or any device running Siri. This coupled with native knowledge, for instance the fact that most people are asleep between 11pm and 6.00am will let you cut up to 23 percent on your energy bill.
Ecobee3 thermostat assumes a square shape with curved edges and a black bezel that blends into the equally dark 3.5-inch touch screen. At the very bottom is a small sensor to the left and the proud ‘Ecobee’ label at the center. This makes the Ecobee thermostat tinier than conventional Honeywell thermostats but as classical as the famous Nest thermostat.
The Ecobee3 remote sensor assumes the same shape but is a bit smaller and is clad in pure white. It also has the small motion sensor to detect when someone is around.
How to Install the Ecobee3 Wifi Thermostat
The Ecobee3 thermostat doesn’t have an inbuilt battery. This means that you have to install the C-wire. Ecobee believes this is a more reliable power source. I am obliged to agree as this means I will no longer have to worry about swapping the battery a little bit too soon.
If you have the right residential furnace or air conditioning unit, you will find extending your own C-wire using the bundled Power Extender Kit quite delightful.
If you are not sure about this, you might consider getting an installation quote from a professional.
Please follow this guide of how to install a thermostat with no c wire if you are comfortable with a DIY.
The sensors run on CR2032 coin-cell batteries that should run for 4 years. You just have to stick your remote sensor where you want it and you are good to go.
The setup procedure includes entering a Wi-Fi password, configuring your location and introducing the Ecobee to your home by telling it what type of HVAC you are running. The Ecobee3 thermostat can connect with up to 32 wireless sensors each having an effective range of 45 feet.
Appearance and Performance
The Ecobee3 interface reminds me of my smartphone. It has a lock screen that displays the current temperature in big numbers and a couple of icons on local weather. If the motion sensor detects you, the display will change to a vertical line. The upper side has blue dots, the lower half orange. Each has small circle of the ultimate cooling or heating temperature that you can adjust by dragging up or down. Simple.
I must admit, you will find the Ecobee3 thermostat controls simpler and easier to understand. Setting schedules, reminders and vacation mode is simple. A weather forecast icon at the center of the action panel keeps you in touch with the outside world while the icon to the right toggles home and away mode.
The thermostat is nimble and quick to respond. It doesn’t matter whether you are changing the setting manually using the app or thermostat display, or have set it to follow you. The Follow Me feature lets the Ecobee smart thermostat air condition rooms it detects motion in. This will not only keep your home office warm but also ensure it doesn’t waste power conditioning the office when you are not around.
Why I love the Ecobee3 Wi-Fi Thermostat

- Instant response to App and web portal app inputs. This makes it simple to manage the Ecobee3 while on the go
- Connects to smart home systems making it a seamless addition to the internet of things. Compatible with Apple homeKit Integration, SmartThings, Vera and Control4 smart home systems
- Compatible with the famous automation tool, the IFTTT(if this then that uses simple logical blocks to yield actions, for instance, turn on Home Setting when you are in the neighborhood)
- Siri voice commands work as a charm. You can find the complete list of Ecobee Siri commands here if you prefer talking to your thermostat.
